How to use this paint calculator
- 1Enter the length of your room.
- 2Enter the width of your room.
- 3Enter the height of the walls.
- 4Enter the number of doors and windows to get a more accurate estimate.
- 5Click "Calculate" to see the estimated wall area and paint needed.
The calculation is based on: Wall Area = 2 × (length + width) × height - (doors × 1.8) - (windows × 1.5). Paint needed is calculated assuming 1 liter covers approximately 10 square meters.
How Does a Paint Calculator Work?
Wall Area Calculation
A paint calculator first calculates the total surface area of your walls. This is done by measuring the perimeter of the room (2 × length + 2 × width) and multiplying by the wall height. This gives you the total area that needs to be painted.
Door and Window Deduction
Most rooms have doors and windows that don't need painting. Our calculator automatically deducts these areas from the total wall area. We use standard average sizes: doors typically cover about 1.8 square meters, and windows cover about 1.5 square meters. This gives you a more accurate estimate of the actual area to be painted.
Paint Coverage
Once we have the net wall area, we divide by the average paint coverage rate. Most standard interior paints cover approximately 10 square meters per liter for one coat. If you're applying multiple coats, simply multiply the result by the number of coats needed. This helps you determine exactly how much paint to purchase for your project.
Calculation Formula
Total Wall Area
Wall Area = 2 × (length + width) × height
Net Wall Area (after deductions)
Net Area = Wall Area - (doors × 1.8) - (windows × 1.5)
Paint Required
Paint = Net Area ÷ Coverage Rate (10 sqm/liter)
Example Calculation
Sample Room
- • Length: 5 meters
- • Width: 4 meters
- • Height: 2.4 meters
- • Doors: 1
- • Windows: 2
Calculate Wall Area
2 × (5 + 4) × 2.4 = 2 × 9 × 2.4 = 43.2 sqm
Deduct Doors and Windows
43.2 - (1 × 1.8) - (2 × 1.5) = 43.2 - 1.8 - 3.0 = 38.4 sqm
Calculate Paint Needed
38.4 ÷ 10 = 3.84 liters (for one coat)
For two coats: 3.84 × 2 = 7.68 liters
Painting Tips
Measure Twice
Always double-check your measurements before purchasing paint. Small measurement errors can lead to significant material waste or shortages.
Buy Extra Paint
Purchase 10-15% more paint than calculated. This extra paint can be used for touch-ups and ensures color consistency if you need to repaint later.
Prepare Surfaces
Proper surface preparation (cleaning, sanding, priming) ensures better paint adhesion and coverage, potentially reducing the amount of paint needed.
Use Quality Tools
High-quality paintbrushes and rollers provide better coverage with fewer strokes, helping you achieve professional results with less paint.
